Invited Presentations: 

  •  December 10, 2011 - Kathy gave a demonstration at Bookworks in Albuquerque on how to make a Star-O-Lito! These fun and easy paper bag creations are a great way to celebrate the holidays and New Mexico’s 100th Birthday! (And, they glow in the dark, provided you have a lighted candle inside!) Kathy’s book, READiscover New Mexico – A Tri-Lingual Adventure in Literacy, was available. (It’s a great resource for Centennial ideas!) 
  • December 7, 2011 Kathy appeared at “Winterfest” — an Author/Illlustrator event sponsored by the Albuquerque Public Schools Department of Library Services for APS librarians. The event took place at the UNM Continuing Education Building. 
  • October 28, 2011 -Kathy and Valerie Nye gave a presentation on True Stories of Censorship Battles in America’s Libraries at the New Mexico Library Association’s Fall Mini-Conference at the New Mexico State Library.
  • October 28, 2011 – Kathy presented Centennial on a $hoestring”  at the New Mexico Library Association’s Fall Mini-Conference at the New Mexico State Library.
  • October 2, 2011 – Kathy and Valerie Nye gave a presentation on True Stories of Censorship Battles in America’s Libraries at the 4th annual New Mexico Women Authors’ Book Festival at  the New Mexico History Museum on the Plaza in Santa Fe.
  • April 30, 2011Kathy took part in the Children’s Fair, a fun-filled family event at the Anderson Abruzzo International Balloon Museum in Albuquerque. Kathy was selling and signing READiscover New Mexico – A Tri-Lingual Adventure in Literacy.
  • April 26, 2011 – Kathy gave presentations on License Plate Literacy to the 3rd - 5th graders of Lowell Elementary School in Albuquerque during their Young Authors Week.
  • April 6 – 9 , 2011 – Kathy and Valerie Nye gave a presentation on True Stories of Censorship Battles in American Libraries at the Mountain Plains Library Association annual conference in Billings, Montana.
  • Summer Reading Program Workshops, October/November 2010 Presented a total of six regional workshops based on the 2011 SRP themes: One World, Many Stories (Children) and You Are Here (Teens). Nearly 200 Colorado public library staff members took part in Parachute, Vail, Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and Durango.

  • Esperanza Elementary School, Farmington NM, October 22, 2009 Presented “Rosita’s Ramble” from READiscover New Mexico and several booktalks to two assemblies (Grades K-2 & 3-5) and an evening Family Fun Night gathering.
  • Summer Reading Program Workshops, October 7 – 16 2009 Presented a total of six regional workshops based on the 2010 SRP themes: Make a Splash – READ! (Children) and Make Waves @ Your Library (Teens). Nearly 200 Colorado public library staff members took part in Durango, Delta, Vail, Greeley, Pueblo, and Westminster.
  • New Mexico Women Authors’ Book Festival, Santa Fe, NM, September 26, 2009
  • New Mexico Library Association Annual Conference, Albuquerque , April 24, 2009 Presented “READiscover New Mexico – Five Years Later”. Based on the theme for the 2004 statewide Summer Reading Program, READiscover New Mexico – A Tri-Lingual Adventure in Literacy is now an award-winning handbook/activity book for celebrating the Land of Enchantment. And our 100th Birthday is coming in 2012!

  • Children’s Book Festival, University of Southern Mississippi, April 2 – 4, 2008 I gave two presentations entitled: READiscover [Your State Here] Summary: Spotlight the unique characteristics (history, languages, state monuments, Official State Flower/Bird/Fossil, etc.) of your state and promote literacy at the same time. Using my book, READiscover New Mexico — A Tri-Lingual Adventure in Literacy as a model, I demonstrated how to adapt several activities (license plate literacy, song parodies, booklists, recipe math, riddles, trivia, and more) to a variety of states represented by festival attendees.

  •  Halloween Holiday Howl at The Barn in Los Ranchos,  October 29, 2011.   A  fun event featuring many authors and crafters.
  • ₵entennial on a $hoestring, Page One Bookstore, Albuquerque  Friday, September 9, 2011   Based on her book READiscover New Mexico – A Tri-Lingual Adventure in Literacy, Kathy shared the various NM-themed activities in the book for children, teens and families, including crafts, bibliographies, recipes, holiday traditions, etc. She included New Mexico trivia, related websites, and riddles. Kathy talked about the new Centennial license plate and showed how people (and kids!) can make their own personalized version using reproducible patterns in the book plus a supplemental handout that she provided. Since New Mexico was the 47th “star” on the US Flag, Kathy demonstrated how to make “Star-o-Litos.”  It was a fun pre-100th Birthday evening with Biscochitos (our Official State Cookie) included!
